Boating and Water Sports on DeGray Lake
Independent research on DeGray Lake -- 13,800 acres, Clark and Caddo counties, USACE Little Rock District. Data verified July 2026.
Full Recreation Lake
DeGray Lake is a full-recreation USACE reservoir with no horsepower restrictions, no personal watercraft prohibition, and no restricted speed zones except for the standard slow-no-wake requirements near marina areas and designated swim beaches. Water skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, and high-speed recreational boating are all permitted on the main lake body. The 13,800-acre surface provides ample space for multiple recreational uses to coexist without conflict during all but the busiest summer weekend periods.
The Hurricane Creek arm provides naturally sheltered water that is calmer than the main lake body during periods of open-water chop or afternoon thermals. Smaller boats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards work comfortably in the arm regardless of main-lake conditions. This sheltered arm character is part of what makes the Hurricane Creek area attractive to residential buyers -- the protected water is usable for a wider range of conditions and a wider range of boating experience levels than an open-water main lake exposure would allow.
DeGray Lake Resort State Park Marina
The resort state park marina on the north shore is the primary full-service boating facility on the lake. The marina provides boat rentals (fishing boats, pontoon boats, kayaks, and canoes available at various times through the season), fuel, transient dockage for visiting boaters, and boat launch access for day visitors. Annual marina slips for resident boat owners are available through the state park marina leasing process -- contact the marina directly for current slip availability and annual slip rental pricing, which is set by Arkansas State Parks and subject to annual rate review.
The marina's island location within the state park creates an interesting logistical situation: accessing the marina requires either boating to it or driving across the causeway to the park island. For waterfront property owners in the Hurricane Creek arm, the boat approach is the more natural route; for property owners accessing via Highway 7, the causeway drive to the marina parking area provides land-based access. Clarify the access logistics for any property you are considering relative to how you plan to use the marina infrastructure.
Houseboat and Larger Craft
DeGray Lake's size and depth support houseboat use, though the houseboat rental and mooring infrastructure here is less developed than at Lake Ouachita to the northwest or Lake Hamilton to the north. Day-cruising and overnight anchoring in cove areas by larger boats is common during summer. Buyers planning to keep a large cruiser or houseboat at DeGray Lake should verify slip availability and dimensional specifications at the marina before purchase, as not all marinas on smaller lakes accommodate vessels above a certain length or beam without advance arrangement.
Iron Mountain Trailhead Boat Access
The Iron Mountain Trail System is accessible by foot from the state park, but boaters can also access trailhead areas via the state park boat launch and marina. Combining a morning on the lake with an afternoon on the Iron Mountain trails -- boat to the park marina, lock up, hike or bike -- is a practical option that DeGray Lake's compressed geography makes possible. Few lake destinations in Arkansas offer the ability to transition between water recreation and world-class trail recreation within a single day trip without returning to a trailhead by car.
