Boating on Lake Allatoona
Lake Allatoona recorded more visitor hours than any other Army Corps lake in the country, and a significant portion of those visitors arrive by boat. The lake supports every form of motorized recreation — wakeboarding, waterskiing, tubing, pontoon cruising, houseboating, and personal watercraft — across 12,010 acres with 270 miles of shoreline. Eight full-service marinas and 26 public boat ramps distribute access around the lake. What boaters accustomed to private lakes need to understand: Allatoona is an extremely heavily used public resource, and summer weekend navigation requires more awareness and patience than most comparable lakes.
The Eight Marinas
Allatoona Landing Marina & Resort, near I-75 Exit 283 in the Emerson/Cartersville area, is a full-service Suntex marina offering wet slip rentals, dry storage, boat rentals through Ahoy Boats, an RV campground, and a boat sales operation. The marina is one of the largest on the lake and a primary service point for the northern Bartow County shoreline. Glade Marina, near I-75 Exit 278 in Acworth, is also Suntex-operated and serves the Cobb County end of the lake. Glade is noted for its level dock design, which reduces the steep-ramp problem that affects some other Allatoona marinas during drawdown periods. Both Suntex locations host Freedom Boat Club memberships for owners who want access to a maintained fleet without owning.
Harbor Town Marina hosts two sailing clubs — South Winds Sailing Club and Harbor Town Yacht Club — making it the primary sailing hub on a lake that is otherwise dominated by powerboats. Holiday Harbor Marina offers RV pads, cabin rentals, and boat rentals, serving as a combination lodging and marina operation on the Bartow County shore. Park Marina offers boat and jet ski rentals for day visitors. Victoria Harbour Marina and Little River Marina round out the eight, with the full complement providing fuel, mechanical services, and storage at points distributed around the 270-mile shoreline. No part of the lake is more than a reasonable boat ride from marina services.
Public Boat Ramps
Twenty-six public boat ramps provide trailered access around Lake Allatoona. Key access points include Tanyard Creek Boat Ramp (Acworth, near the Cobb County shoreline), Galts Ferry Boat Ramp (Acworth area), Dallas Landing Boat Ramp (Acworth), Allatoona Landing Boat Ramp (Emerson/Cartersville), Kellogg Creek Boat Ramp (Cartersville), Red Top Mountain State Park Boat Ramp (Cartersville), and Victoria Boat Ramp (Cartersville). Peak summer weekends produce significant ramp congestion at the most popular access points, particularly those near I-75 exits. Arriving before 8 AM on Saturday and Sunday mornings during June through August dramatically reduces wait time at ramps. The Corps campgrounds include ramps that are less congested than the dedicated public ramp sites.
Georgia Boating Laws on Allatoona
Georgia boating law requires personal flotation devices for every person aboard. Children 12 and under must wear a properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved PFD at all times on Class A boats (under 16 feet). Boats 16 feet or longer must carry a Type IV throwable device in addition to wearable PFDs. Georgia law requires boaters born after January 1, 1998, to complete a boating safety course before operating a vessel. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division enforces boating laws on Allatoona; rangers are present on the water throughout the summer season.
No-wake zones are established within 100 feet of docks, shorelines, and swimming areas. Operating at idle speed is required within these zones. The Corps also enforces quiet hours and restrictions in the campground areas. Alcohol-related boating violations are treated seriously; Georgia's BUI law mirrors DUI law in terms of penalties and enforcement posture. On peak holiday weekends, law enforcement presence on the water is substantial.
Houseboats and Extended Stays
Houseboats are permitted on Lake Allatoona, which distinguishes it from several other Corps lakes in the Southeast that prohibit them. Several marinas accommodate houseboat slips. Permanent residence on a houseboat is not permitted under Corps rules, but extended recreational use is common. The houseboat rental market exists on Allatoona and provides an option for buyers who want to experience lake living before committing to property ownership.
Sailing on Allatoona
While Allatoona is primarily a powerboat lake, sailing is a genuine and organized activity. Harbor Town Marina serves as the base for both South Winds Sailing Club and Harbor Town Yacht Club. The Allatoona Yacht Club, established in 1952 and located at Red Top Mountain State Park, is one of the oldest sailing organizations on the lake. Atlanta Yacht Club is positioned on the southern portion of the lake, south of the dam and west of Galts Ferry Landing. Sailboat racing events, regattas, and club cruises occur throughout the spring and fall calendar. The lake's 12,000 acres provide adequate sailing room away from the most congested powerboat areas near the I-75 corridor, and the northwestern arms see less traffic than the main body.
Managing Your Boat Through the Drawdown
The 17-foot annual drawdown is the central winter planning consideration for every Allatoona boat owner. Owners with private docks in deep water can often leave boats in the water through winter with appropriate winterization and dock adjustments. Owners in shallow coves — or those with floating docks that lose adequate depth by November — should plan for marina winter storage. Both Glade Marina and Allatoona Landing offer dry stack covered and uncovered storage; rates depend on boat length and storage type but typically run $600 to $1,000 for a five-month covered storage period on a typical pontoon or runabout. Scheduling storage by October 1 is advisable, as the drawdown typically begins in late October and the most in-demand storage spots fill before that.
For buyers considering a Freedom Boat Club membership as an alternative to boat ownership, both Glade Marina and Allatoona Landing are Freedom Boat Club locations. Membership provides access to a maintained fleet of boats without the costs of ownership, storage, maintenance, or insurance — a rational alternative for buyers who want lake access without the full commitment of vessel ownership, particularly during the first year on the lake while they learn the waterways and their usage patterns.
