Things to Do on Kentucky Lake
The lake itself is the primary activity. But Land Between the Lakes on the western shore, two major state resort parks, Murray State University programming, and a cluster of regional attractions give Kentucky Lake property owners significantly more off-water options than most lake markets of comparable remoteness.
Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area
Land Between the Lakes is the defining off-water amenity for the entire Kentucky Lake/Barkley system. A 170,000-acre forested peninsula managed by the US Forest Service, LBL runs between Kentucky Lake on the east and Lake Barkley on the west for approximately 40 miles, forming the permanent undeveloped western shoreline of Kentucky Lake. It draws over one million visitors per year and functions as a regional wilderness destination that would justify a destination visit on its own, regardless of the lake.
LBL's trail network exceeds 200 miles, traversing mature hardwood forest with routes ranging from easy lakeside walks to multi-day backcountry backpacking loops. Mountain biking and equestrian trails run through dedicated sections of the recreation area. Turkey Bay OHV Area within LBL provides 100 miles of dedicated off-highway vehicle trails for ATVs, side-by-sides, and four-wheel-drive vehicles — one of the largest public OHV areas in the eastern United States.
The Elk and Bison Prairie is a 700-acre enclosed habitat within LBL where a free-roaming herd of elk and a herd of American bison are observable from a paved auto tour route. The elk program — elk were reintroduced to western Kentucky through LBL — has grown into a stable and increasingly visible population. Spring calving season and fall rut bring distinctive animal behavior observable from the tour road. For residents of the surrounding lake communities, the prairie becomes a routine wildlife destination that visiting guests consistently find remarkable.
The Golden Pond Visitor Center and Planetarium (283 Visitor Center Drive, Golden Pond, KY) offers interpretive exhibits, wildlife programming, and regular astronomy shows in its 40-foot dome planetarium. The Homeplace-1850 is a working living-history farm where interpreters in period clothing demonstrate daily life on an 1850s Kentucky farm — a more substantive historical interpretation than most comparable attractions. The Nature Station at LBL provides close-up wildlife encounters with live native animals.
Kentucky Dam Village and Kenlake State Resort Parks
Two Kentucky State Resort Parks serve the Kentucky Lake market and function as genuine community anchors for full-time residents, not just tourist attractions. Kentucky Dam Village State Park near Gilbertsville (near Kentucky Dam at the north end of the lake) features a 72-room lodge, Harbor Lights Restaurant, an 18-hole golf course, marina with slips, hiking trails, horse stable, tennis courts, and year-round programming. For Marshall County lake residents, this park's year-round operations provide reliable recreation and dining anchor throughout the off-season.
Kenlake State Resort Park in Aurora (888 Kenlake Marina Lane area, 270-474-2245) is the second major state park on the Kentucky Lake shoreline, featuring cottages and lodge rooms, meeting facilities, hiking trails, an indoor tennis center and fitness facilities, picnic areas, a marina, and the floating restaurant on site. Kenlake's indoor tennis center is genuinely unusual for a rural lake park and provides year-round activity options for residents who want structured recreational programming independent of weather conditions.
Golf
The Kentucky Lake region supports approximately 25 golf courses within an hour of the lake, covering a range of public and private options. The Kentucky Dam Village State Park 18-hole course anchors the northern lake area. Benton Golf and Country Club in Benton provides a private option for Marshall County residents. The Birmingham Pointe Golf Course and Mineral Mound State Park Golf Course in Eddyville (across Lake Barkley) extend the options for residents willing to cross into Barkley territory. Murray Country Club in Murray provides Calloway County residents with a private course option. For serious golfers relocating to the Kentucky Lake area, the course count — while not a resort golf concentration — is adequate for regular play.
Murray State University Programming
For Calloway County lake residents specifically, Murray State University provides a year-round activity calendar that materially distinguishes the Calloway County experience from comparable rural lake markets. MSU Racers basketball draws crowds to the CFSB Center during winter months — Kentucky college basketball culture makes home games genuine community events rather than niche athletic entertainment. The Clara M. Eagle Art Gallery and the MSU Performing Arts programming bring visual arts and performance to a market that would not otherwise support them. The university's lecture series, academic events, and continuing education programs provide intellectual engagement options that purely rural communities lack.
Murray's annual Ice Cream Festival is one of the region's most attended summer community events, drawing visitors from across western Kentucky. The Kentucky Opry in Benton (310 US Route 68 West, Benton) provides live country and bluegrass musical entertainment for residents in the northern lake area. The Badgett Playhouse in Grand Rivers (near Green Turtle Bay, northern Barkley/Kentucky Lake junction) books professional tribute and musical acts year-round that draw audiences from across the lake region.
Tennessee Side: Birdsong Resort and Paris Landing
The Tennessee portion of Kentucky Lake extends the recreation and attraction landscape significantly for residents willing to explore the full lake corridor. Birdsong Resort and Marina in Camden, TN (1040 Birdsong Marina Road, 731-584-7880) operates a Tennessee River Freshwater Pearl Museum and farm — the only freshwater pearl-culturing operation in North America open to the public. The pearl farm tour and museum are genuinely unusual attractions that most visitors to the lake system have not encountered. Paris Landing State Park in Buchanan, TN provides additional marina, beach, pool, golf, and resort dining on the Tennessee side of the lake.
Fort Donelson National Battlefield in Dover, TN — at the southern end of Lake Barkley and accessible by boat on the combined lake system — preserves the site of the 1862 Civil War engagement where Ulysses Grant earned national recognition. The battlefield is accessible by road from Murray or Benton in approximately 45 to 60 minutes. For residents interested in Civil War history, the western Tennessee and western Kentucky lake region is exceptionally rich in sites from the 1862 Tennessee River campaigns.
