Boating on Nolin Lake

5,795 acres at summer pool, 39 miles long, 75 feet deep near the dam. Three seasonal marinas serve different parts of the lake. The critical operational fact: no marina at Nolin operates year-round. Plan accordingly.

Marinas: Three Seasonal Operations

Unlike Rough River Lake's Rough River Dam Marina — which operates year-round — all three marinas on Nolin Lake are seasonal. This is an important operational difference. There is no year-round fuel dock on Nolin Lake. There is no year-round marine services operation. Outside the boating season, property owners who need fuel, supplies, or marine assistance must trailer their boats to facilities off the lake or plan well in advance.

Moutardier Resort and Marina (1990 Moutardier Road, 270-286-4069) on the west shore serves the Moutardier community and is the most fully developed marina facility on the lake, with slip rentals, fuel, boat rentals (wave runners, ski boats, pontoons, and fishing boats per LakeHouse.com documentation), accommodations, and the resort character of the Moutardier community. It is accessible from KY-259 approximately 12 miles south of Leitchfield. Moutardier is the primary marina hub for the lower and mid-lake west shore boating community.

Wax Marina (270-242-7205) is on the east shore at the KY-88 bridge crossing, 15 miles south of Clarkson. It serves the mid-lake east shore community and marks the approximate transition point between the deeper lower lake and the shallower upper lake. The Wax Marina location at the KY-88 bridge crossing is a natural convergence point — the bridge provides land access, the marina provides water services.

Ponderosa Boat Dock (270-242-7215) is in the upper lake, 13 miles south of Clarkson off KY-88. It serves the upper lake community above Wax and provides the only marina-type access point for boaters in the shallower upper section of the lake. Because the upper lake above Wax is significantly shallower — averaging approximately 15 feet deep — Ponderosa's seasonal operating status and the upper lake's drawdown limitations combine to create the most self-sufficient boating environment of any section of Nolin Lake.

Boat Launch Ramps

The Brier Creek boat ramp at Nolin Lake State Park (7 miles northeast of the dam off KY-1827) provides no-fee public access in the lower lake near the dam and state park area. The Bacon Creek boat ramp (north of Cub Run, Brigg Webb Road off KY-728) provides no-fee public access for the upper lake Hart County section. USACE also maintains ramps at the Dog Creek, Moutardier, and Wax Recreation Areas. The no-fee ramps at Brier Creek and Bacon Creek are notable — unlike the $5 fee at Rough River Lake ramps, these provide free public launch access.

The 23-foot seasonal drawdown affects boat ramp access as well as dock access. Upper lake ramps near Ponderosa and Bacon Creek may have reduced functionality at winter pool as water recedes from ramp surfaces. The USACE recreation areas at Dog Creek, Moutardier, and Wax maintain their ramps but the pool depth at each ramp changes with the drawdown cycle.

The Upper Lake vs. Lower Lake Boating Contrast

The contrast between boating in the lower lake near the dam versus the upper lake above Wax is significant enough that they feel like different lakes. The lower lake — deep, relatively clear, with limestone rock faces and open water — is where most motorized recreation concentrates: water skiing, wakeboarding, and faster-paced recreational boating on the broader sections. The upper lake above Wax is shallower, greener, and more productive biologically — a better fishing environment, a better paddling environment, and a worse environment for high-speed motorized recreation due to the shallower depths and narrower character.

Year-round boaters who keep vessels in the water rather than trailering need to plan the drawdown carefully. As the lake drops from summer pool to winter pool, the upper lake becomes inaccessible for most motorized vessels before the lower lake does. The transition window — when the lake is somewhere between summer and winter pool in October and November — requires attention to current pool levels before any upper-lake trip. The USACE water data tool at water.usace.army.mil provides current elevation data for planning purposes.

Kayaking and Paddling on Nolin Lake

The quieter coves and upper arm sections of Nolin Lake are well-suited to kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards. The upper lake above Wax — while too shallow for confident motorboat navigation during drawdown — is productive paddling territory in spring and early summer when the pool is rising and the shallower water is full of crappie staging in submerged timber. The Bacon Creek arm accessible from the Bacon Creek ramp north of Cub Run is one of the more scenic paddling areas in the upper lake, with wooded shorelines and the agricultural and forested landscape of Hart County visible from the water.

The lower lake near the dam offers a different paddling character: deeper, clearer water with limestone rock faces and the more open-water feel of the main channel. Paddlers who want to explore the lower lake's geology and the cliff faces that define the dam area should plan to launch from the Brier Creek ramp at Nolin Lake State Park and paddle south toward the dam, staying aware of motorized traffic on summer weekends. Early mornings on the lower lake before motorized traffic begins are some of the most productive paddling hours for both wildlife observation and largemouth bass topwater fishing from a kayak.

Green River access within Mammoth Cave National Park — 22 miles from the lake — provides a complementary river paddling experience for Nolin Lake residents and guests. The Green River through the park is a federally protected wild river corridor with no motorized boat access, making it one of the few places in this region where flatwater canoe and kayak paddling happens in genuinely wild conditions. Canoe rental and shuttle services operate near the park for visitors who want guided Green River access without trailering their own boats.

Kentucky Boating Registration and Safety

All motorboats at Nolin Lake must be registered with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Operators born after January 1, 1999 must hold a Kentucky Boating Safety Certificate to operate a motorized vessel. Personal flotation devices for all passengers, navigation lights for after-dark use, a fire extinguisher, and a sound-producing device are required under Kentucky boating law. The USACE Louisville District enforces boating regulations including any no-wake zones, speed restrictions near campground swimming areas, and the restricted zone around the dam structure. Stay well outside the Corps' warning buoy perimeter around the Nolin River Dam at Bee Spring.

Nolin Lake falls entirely within Kentucky, which simplifies licensing — a Kentucky boat registration and Kentucky Boating Safety Certificate cover all operations on the lake without any cross-state complication. Watercraft registration is through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet at transportation.ky.gov. Boating safety courses are available through KDFWR and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. The Louisville District project office at Bee Spring (270-286-4511) is the contact for questions about specific Nolin Lake boating regulations, no-wake zone locations, and campground-area speed restrictions.
