Things to Do Near Bull Shoals Lake Missouri
The lake is the centerpiece, but the Ozarks surrounding it offer hiking, hunting, caving, state parks, and Branson's full entertainment complex within an hour. Here is how residents and visitors fill their time beyond the dock.
Branson: The Entertainment Hub
Branson, Missouri is the single largest off-lake amenity for Bull Shoals MO residents. Located 25–60 minutes north depending on which arm of the lake you are on (Taney County properties are closest, Ozark County properties farthest), Branson offers a concentrated entertainment district unlike anything else in the Midwest. The Branson Landing waterfront complex has shopping, dining, and live entertainment along Lake Taneycomo. Silver Dollar City is one of the premier theme parks in the region with seasonal events, craft beer and food festivals, and nationally ranked roller coasters. Branson's famous live music theaters run year-round programming ranging from country and gospel to comedy to tribute acts. For retirees and families on the MO side of Bull Shoals, Branson functions as the entertainment and dining destination that the lake itself does not provide.
Mark Twain National Forest
The Bull Shoals Missouri area is surrounded by Mark Twain National Forest, which covers 1.5 million acres of Ozarks terrain across southern Missouri. The forest provides thousands of miles of hiking trails, off-road vehicle routes, and dispersed camping opportunities directly accessible from the lake area. The Hercules Glades Wilderness, located in the southern Taney County portion of Mark Twain National Forest, is a particularly scenic wilderness area with dramatic Ozarks glade and forest terrain accessible via trail. Ozarks glades — rocky, cedar-dotted open areas on steep hillsides — are a unique ecological community that hosts wildflowers, collared lizards, and open-sky hiking scenery.
Hunting: Deer, Turkey, and Bear
The Mark Twain National Forest lands surrounding Bull Shoals are prime hunting territory. White-tailed deer season in Missouri runs from September through January, with archery, firearm, and muzzleloader seasons staggered throughout the fall and winter. Wild turkey spring season is a major draw for hunters in April and May in the Ozarks region. Missouri also opened a modern black bear season in 2021, and Ozark County produced the first documented modern bear harvest in the county in October 2025 — a 320-pound boar. Bear hunting in the Ozarks is an emerging opportunity for hunters in the area. The USACE-managed lands around Bull Shoals also allow hunting under cooperative agreements with Missouri Department of Conservation.
Kayaking and Canoeing
Bull Shoals Lake's narrow upper coves and side arms in Ozark County are exceptional kayaking and canoeing territory. The protected coves, which see almost no powerboat traffic on weekday mornings, allow paddle craft to explore cedar bluffs, see wildlife (eagles, herons, deer coming to water), and access fishing in shallow shoreline areas that powerboats cannot reach. The White River below Bull Shoals Dam is also world-famous for its trout fishing and offers whitewater paddling below the dam in higher discharge periods.
Table Rock Lake and State Park
Table Rock Lake, a larger USACE reservoir on the White River upstream of Bull Shoals, is accessible from the Taney County arm of Bull Shoals in approximately 30–45 minutes. Table Rock Lake State Park near Branson offers swimming beaches, hiking trails, boat ramps, and camping facilities. Table Rock has more commercial development than Bull Shoals and a more active waterfront dining scene, making it a complementary day trip for Bull Shoals MO residents who want the resort-lake experience without the commitment of living on a more commercial lake.
Caving: Ozarks Underground
The Ozarks limestone karst terrain around Bull Shoals produces some of the region's most distinctive caves. Blanchard Springs Caverns, managed by the USFS in Arkansas approximately 45–60 minutes south of the Missouri lake arm, is one of the most impressive show caves in the central United States — a living, actively growing cave system open for guided tours. Several commercial show caves operate in the Branson corridor as well, including Talking Rocks Cavern near Galena, MO. Cave spring systems also contribute to the lake's water clarity.
