A 1,305-acre full-recreational lake 10 miles from Hickory and an hour from Charlotte, on the Catawba River chain between Lake Hickory and Lake Norman. Duke Energy holds the pool at 97 feet year-round -- one of the few Catawba chain lakes with no seasonal drawdown. The Riverwalk gated community has been building out since 1995 with 264 lots, 124 homes, and meaningfully low HOA dues compared to the resort communities further west. Lookout Shoals Lake is the fourth reservoir in Duke Energy's Catawba River chain, sitting between Lake Hickory to the north and Lake Norman to the south. The dam was built in 1915 by Southern Power Company -- one of the oldest on the river -- and is now licensed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission under Duke Energy's Catawba-Wateree hydroelectric project. At 1,305 acres with 37 miles of shoreline, the lake occupies a long, narrow valley through parts of Iredell, Alexander, and Catawba counties. Its average depth of 30 feet and relatively clear water support active fishing and full water sports.
The most important fact for buyers comparing Lookout Shoals to other Catawba chain lakes: Duke Energy manages this reservoir to a year-round target elevation of 97 feet with no significant seasonal drawdown. Lake Norman typically drops two feet in winter. Lake Hickory draws down seasonally. Lookout Shoals does not. This means docks, boat access, and shoreline conditions are more consistent throughout the year than on most Duke Energy lakes in the region -- a genuine quality-of-life distinction for year-round residents and owners who visit in fall and winter.
Riverwalk: The Primary Residential Community
Riverwalk, developed beginning in 1995, is the lake's principal gated community. Located in rural Iredell County near Stony Point, it has 264 planned lots, approximately 124 of which had homes built as of the community's own reporting. The community describes itself as "a quiet and tranquil alternative on Lookout Shoals Lake, to the rapidly growing communities downstream" -- a reference to Lake Norman, whose development pressure has intensified significantly in the years since Riverwalk was founded. The description holds up. Riverwalk sits in genuine rural Iredell County countryside, surrounded by farms and woods, with a gated entry that gives the community a security-and-privacy character unusual for the price point.
The HOA is volunteer-run and active, maintaining what multiple listing descriptions call "very nominal" or "relatively low" annual dues compared to the resort communities further west. Community amenities focus on lake access: the Beach Area includes a boat launch, marina with slips, sandy beach, pavilion, and picnic facilities. A separate secure storage lot handles boat trailers and RVs -- an important practical amenity for residents who launch and retrieve boats regularly. The community sits about three minutes by golf cart from the beach area from many of the established lots.
