Boating Tellico Lake
14,200 acres at stable year-round pool. A navigable canal connects to Fort Loudoun Lake for twice the range. The Tellico Village Yacht Club provides the primary marina infrastructure. All-sports TVA lake 30 minutes from Knoxville.
A Lake Built for Recreation
Unlike every other TVA dam on the Tennessee River system, Tellico Dam was built primarily for economic development and recreation — not flood control or power generation. The result is a lake whose pool management is not subject to the same flood-storage and drawdown pressures that govern TVA's larger reservoirs. Tellico's stable 820 ft MSL pool is one of the most consistent in the TVA system. What this means for boaters: the lake looks and behaves approximately the same in January as it does in July. Coves that are navigable at summer full pool remain navigable in winter. Docks that are at the water level in June are at the water level in December. This operational consistency is a meaningful advantage for the year-round boating lifestyle that Tellico Village residents have built around the lake over 40 years.
The Fort Loudoun Canal Connection
One of Tellico Lake's most distinctive boating features is the 850-foot navigable canal that connects the Tellico impoundment to Fort Loudoun Lake upstream. Fort Loudoun Lake is a 60-mile Tennessee River reservoir extending northeast toward Knoxville, connected to the Tennessee River navigation system and ultimately to downtown Knoxville via additional locks and dams. A boater at Tellico Village can transit through the canal and access the full Fort Loudoun reservoir without trailering. This effectively doubles the available water for extended cruising runs, and for serious cruisers on the Tennessee River waterway, it provides connectivity to the broader inland waterway system stretching from Knoxville toward the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
The canal passage is available for recreational boaters and is managed by TVA. Current conditions, any temporary closures, and specific transit procedures can be confirmed with TVA's dam operations. The Tellico Village Yacht Club, which manages the primary marina facilities for Village residents, can provide practical guidance on canal transit based on current conditions.
Tellico Village Yacht Club
The Tellico Village Yacht Club is the primary marina and boating infrastructure for Village residents. It is operated as part of the TVPOA's amenity portfolio and provides wet slip storage, dry storage, fueling, service, and organized boating activities and events. TVPOA membership in good standing is typically required for Yacht Club access, though non-Village residents may be able to arrange guest access for specific situations. Current slip availability, storage rates, and services are available directly from the TVPOA at tellicovillagepoa.org or 865-458-5778. Individual property owners with private docks on Village lakefront lots maintain separate dock access under their TVA Section 26a permits and TRDA Shoreline Strip rights, in addition to or instead of Yacht Club slip access.
Boating Rules and Safety
TWRA (Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency) enforces boating regulations on Tellico Lake. Standard Tennessee boating laws apply: life jackets required on board for all occupants, children under 12 required to wear USCG-approved PFDs while underway, no-wake zones around docks and in designated areas. The Tellico Village Yacht Club and the Village residential areas have their own posted speed limits and cove behavior expectations that Village residents are expected to follow. Afternoon thunderstorms develop quickly in the summer East Tennessee ridge-and-valley terrain — build an exit plan into any afternoon boating schedule. Emergency: 911 or TWRA Law Enforcement 1-800-255-8972. TVA: 1-800-882-5263. Loudon County Sheriff Marine: 865-458-9400.
Marina Operations and Slip Access
The Tellico Village Yacht Club is the primary marina for Village residents and provides the most organized slip access on Tellico Lake. Slip availability, seasonal rates, and dry storage options are managed through the TVPOA and change periodically. Contact the TVPOA at 865-458-5778 for current availability and pricing. The Yacht Club also provides access to the navigable canal connecting Tellico Lake to Fort Loudoun Lake — a unique amenity that allows Village residents to extend their boating range into the 60-mile Fort Loudoun reservoir without trailering. Non-Village boaters have access to 17 public boat ramps distributed around Tellico Lake for launch access.
Rarity Bay, WindRiver, and other non-Village communities on Tellico Lake have their own marina or community dock access separate from the TVPOA Yacht Club. If you are purchasing in any of these communities, confirm marina access and slip availability with the specific community's HOA or property manager rather than with TVPOA. The communities are distinct governance structures and their marine amenities are independent of each other. For a full-time resident or active boater, understanding which marina serves your specific community — and what the availability and pricing look like — is a practical due diligence step before closing.
Boating Rules and Safety
TWRA enforces boating regulations on Tellico Lake. Standard Tennessee boating laws apply: USCG-approved life jackets required on board, children under 12 required to wear PFDs while underway, no-wake zones around docks and marinas, boating under the influence criminally enforced. The Tellico Village Yacht Club and Tellico Village communities post specific cove and community speed limits that residents are expected to observe; these community rules supplement state law and are enforced by the TVPOA. Tellico Lake has 14 no-wake zones in addition to the standard dock proximity no-wake requirements. Summer afternoon thunderstorm development in the ridge-and-valley terrain surrounding the lake is rapid — build a shore plan into any afternoon boating outing. Emergency: 911. TWRA Law Enforcement: 1-800-255-8972. Loudon County Sheriff Marine: 865-458-9400.
Seasonal Traffic Patterns
Tellico Lake receives recreational boat traffic primarily from Knoxville-area residents during spring and summer weekends. The 30-minute drive from most Knoxville neighborhoods makes Tellico Lake a practical day-trip destination for the greater Knoxville metro area, which means summer Saturday mornings can see concentrated boat ramp traffic at the major public launches. Tellico Village residents with private docks or Yacht Club slip access avoid the ramp queues entirely. The lake's 14,200-acre size distributes traffic reasonably well across multiple coves and sections, and the quieter Monroe County sections of the lake near Kahite see significantly less recreational pressure than the main Village areas on busy summer weekends. Fall is consistently the best boating season for light traffic, comfortable temperatures, and the East Tennessee ridge-and-valley foliage that makes the lake's setting exceptional in October and early November.
