On the Water

Cedar Creek Lake's 32,873 acres and 8 marinas support the full range of water recreation. Bass fishing tournaments run year-round -- TPWD data shows 85% of largemouth bass fishing effort on Cedar Creek is tournament angling, more than almost any comparable Texas lake. Casual anglers, crappie fishermen, and catfish hunters share the lake with the tournament circuit without conflict given the lake's size. Water skiing and wake surfing are common on the main lake body on summer weekends. Kayaking and paddleboarding are increasingly popular in the quieter coves, particularly on the south shore near Malakoff where the clearer water makes the experience genuinely pleasant. Boat rentals are available through Cedar Creek Water Sports (Mabank, TX-198) and Aqua World in Gun Barrel City for visitors and STR guests who do not bring their own boats.

The three TPWD-managed wildlife islands -- Big Island, Bird Island, and Persimmon Island -- are off-limits for landing but are popular boat destinations for wildlife watching. The heronries and bird colonies on these islands are visible from boats at reasonable distance and are one of the more distinctive non-fishing water activities on the lake. Cedar Creek Brewery

Cedar Creek Brewery in Seven Points is the lake area's most recognized gathering place for residents and visitors alike. A small craft brewery with a beer garden (Biergarten) where leashed pets are welcome, a Plowboys Cafe taproom restaurant, board games including Giant Jenga and cornhole, and a commitment to local sourcing and local hiring that has made it a genuine community institution. The brewery is within 10 minutes of Gun Barrel City Airpark and is a regular stop for pilots flying into the lake area. The park is specifically noted for its fishing -- Purtis Creek is managed as a trophy bass lake with a 14-inch minimum and a 5-fish daily bag limit, creating a quality fishing experience distinct from the tournament-pressure environment on Cedar Creek Lake itself. The park also has hiking trails, camping with hookups and primitive sites, and a swimming area. For full-time lake residents who want a nature escape distinct from the main lake, Purtis Creek State Park fills a niche that Cedar Creek Lake's recreational infrastructure does not -- quiet, uncrowded, managed for wildlife habitat rather than recreation intensity.

Athens Fish Hatchery

The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens -- commonly called the Athens Fish Hatchery -- is approximately 30 minutes from most Cedar Creek Lake communities and is one of the most impressive public facilities of its kind in Texas. TPWD operates the center as both a working fish hatchery (producing millions of fish annually for stocking Texas lakes, including Cedar Creek Lake's hybrid stripers) and a public visitor center with aquariums, fish feeding stations, and educational programs.
