Seasonal Recreation on Lake Ray Hubbard

Ray Hubbard's 1-3 ft stability keeps ramps open year-round -- unlike Highland Lakes. Rockwall Harbor summer concerts run June through August. Fall sailing regattas. The honest month-by-month recreation guide.

Data verified July 2026

Spring: March Through May

Spring is Ray Hubbard's best fishing season and the beginning of its peak boating period. Pre-spawn largemouth bass fishing in February and March produces trophy-sized fish working shallow structure. White bass spawn in late February through March as fish push into the East Fork Trinity inlet and creek channels. The lake transitions from its winter quiet period to full activity through April and May as DFW families begin weekend lake visits in earnest. Memorial Day weekend is the official start of peak summer season.

Summer: June Through August

Summer at Ray Hubbard is active and accessible in ways that require planning. The lake's proximity to Dallas means Friday afternoon and weekend traffic on I-30 eastbound reflects the full DFW metro trying to reach the lake simultaneously. Leave Dallas before noon on Fridays or after 7 PM to avoid the worst of it. Once on the water, Rockwall Harbor summer concert series at the lighthouse run Thursday through Sunday evenings through the summer -- check the Rockwall Harbor event calendar for the current season schedule. Evening boat trips to the Harbor for dinner and concerts are one of the signature Ray Hubbard summer experiences that no other DFW lake can replicate.

Fall: September Through November

Fall is when Ray Hubbard reveals its best character for full-time residents and frequent visitors. After Labor Day, recreational crowd levels drop and the lake becomes noticeably more manageable. Hybrid striper fishing improves dramatically in fall as fish become more active in cooling water. Sailing regattas from the Lake Ray Hubbard Sailing Association are concentrated in fall. October temperatures make the lake genuinely pleasant for any outdoor activity -- cooler than summer, still warm enough for water use. Rockwall Harbor's fall events calendar includes community activities that draw lake residents into the district through November.

Winter: December Through February

Ray Hubbard's stable water levels mean winter does not fundamentally change the lake's accessibility the way it does at Highland Lakes reservoirs that experience significant winter drawdowns. Boat ramps that operate in July operate in January. The lake is quieter in winter -- weekday mornings are essentially private -- but actively used by the year-round resident fishing and sailing community. Hybrid striper fishing and bass fishing on warmer winter days are genuine activities. Rockwall Harbor's restaurants and hotel remain open year-round, and the waterfront walkways are pleasant on mild winter days. For full-time Ray Hubbard residents, winter is not a dormant season -- it is simply a quieter one.
