Bridgewater Plaza: The Hub

Bridgewater Plaza at the south end of Hales Ford Bridge is the closest thing Smith Mountain Lake has to a downtown restaurant district. The complex sits on the water with transient docking available on the marina side, making it accessible by boat as well as by car from the surrounding communities. Mango's Bar and Grill anchors the dining scene with waterfront seating, a large outdoor stage featuring live bands regularly through the season, and a crowd that includes both locals and vacationers. Pizza Pub and other quick-service options round out the plaza's food offerings. The Chopsticks Chinese restaurant has occupied a Bridgewater Plaza location for many years and provides a lunch buffet option. The plaza also has an ice cream shop that draws families during summer evenings.

Bridgewater Plaza operates at full capacity from roughly May through October and at reduced hours in the off-season. Year-round residents rely on it most heavily in the summer social calendar; the concentration of activity on weekend evenings makes reservation-or-arrive-early the standard approach from June through August.

Dock-Accessible Dining Beyond the Bridge

Jake's Place at Halesford Harbour Marina on the north side of the bridge offers waterfront dining accessible by boat into the Roanoke arm. Napoli by the Lake at Bernard's Landing on the Bedford County north shore is a local favorite for Italian food, accessible by boat with transient dock space available from the gang docks at Bernard's. Drifters at GoodHue Boat Company Eastlake — which earned recognition for best outdoor dining area and best cocktails at the lake — operates on the lower Blackwater arm side with dock access. Coasters at GoodHue Blackwater, which opened summer 2025, brings new waterfront dining to the Blackwater arm from the same operators as Drifters.

Kings Point Pub in Huddleston on the east shore serves Guinness Pie, chicken pot pie, and 12 beers on tap on a seasonal basis, accessible by boat near Lake Haven Marina. Marina Cafe at Mitchell's Point in Huddleston sits between markers C-2 and C-3 and offers burgers, sandwiches, and seasonal seafood with boat docking. Portside Grill and Bar at Virginia Dare Marina in Moneta operates seasonally on the main channel and is accessible by boat on weekends.

Off-Water Dining and the Westlake Corridor

Westlake Towne Center in Hardy (Bedford County) has the lake's highest concentration of non-waterfront dining, including Mexican options, casual American fare, and the Westlake Grille at the Westlake Golf and Country Club. Downtown Moneta on the north side of Hales Ford Bridge adds additional shops and cafes. The Blackwater Marina and Grill at Magnum Point in Union Hall (Franklin County) serves burgers, wings, and sandwiches at a waterfront location accessible by car from the Franklin County side.

For more diverse dining — independent restaurants, ethnic cuisines beyond Mexican and Italian, upscale farm-to-table options — Roanoke is approximately 45 minutes from Westlake Corner and has a strong restaurant scene centered on downtown City Market and the Grandin Village neighborhood. The SML dining scene has grown significantly in the past decade but remains seasonal in character, and full-time residents who require year-round dining variety factor Roanoke into their regular routine.

Off-Season Restaurant Reality

Several waterfront restaurants that operate seven days a week in July shift to three-to-four-day schedules after Labor Day and close entirely between November and March or April. This is the most common surprise for buyers who move to SML as full-time residents after experiencing the lake in summer. Kings Point Pub, Portside Grill, and some of the marina-based restaurants are explicitly seasonal. Mango's at Bridgewater Plaza and the Westlake corridor restaurants maintain the most consistent year-round schedules.
