Winter: January and February

Lake Hamilton in January and February is at its winter pool level — 3 to 5 feet below summer pool elevation, depending on the alternating drawdown schedule Entergy follows. The lake looks different: more shoreline exposed, shallower coves visibly low, dock systems descended to their lowest operational position. This is maintenance season on the water — dock inspections, bulkhead repairs, seawall work that is impossible when the lake is full.

The recreational highlight of this period is fishing, specifically striper fishing below Blakely Dam. Cold water flowing in from Lake Ouachita concentrates striped bass in the lower lake arm, and the January-February period historically produces some of the largest fish of the year for anglers who know where to find them. Fly fishing the Carpenter Dam tailrace for rainbow trout is another winter option that is available when water temperature and flow from Entergy's dam operations cooperate. Oaklawn Racing begins its thoroughbred season in mid-January, shifting the Hot Springs entertainment center of gravity from the lake to the track.

Spring: March Through May

Lake refill begins March 7 and the lake returns to summer pool by March 15 under Entergy's standard schedule. The first weeks of spring are the floating debris period — organic material that accumulated on the winter lakebed floats when the water rises, creating mats that drift around the lake for two to four weeks. By mid-April, the lake has cleared and the spring recreation season is fully underway.

April crappie spawning is one of the lake's most productive fishing periods and draws significant angler attention to the shallow cove areas. Bass fishing comes alive as water temperatures rise through the 60s. Garvan Woodland Gardens reaches peak bloom with azaleas, daffodils, and spring flowers that make March through April the gardens' most visually spectacular period — and arriving by boat during peak bloom is a Lake Hamilton spring ritual for regular residents. The Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival is scheduled for fall, but the Oaklawn Arkansas Derby in April is the spring social event that draws the largest cross-section of Hot Springs and Lake Hamilton residents together.

The Hot Springs Fishing Challenge kicks off in May, releasing 66 tagged fish into Lake Hamilton and Lake Catherine with prize values attached. May through July represents the peak competitive fishing window on the lake as anglers try to land prize-tagged fish. The AGFC Commissioner's Cup Youth Bass Tournament runs on Lake Hamilton in May — one of several organized fishing events that give the lake a competitive fishing calendar that extends well beyond the bass tournament circuit.

Summer: June Through September

Summer is the lake's peak season in every dimension. All waterfront restaurants are open and boat-accessible. Marina rental operations run at full capacity. Boat traffic on the main channel peaks on summer weekend afternoons. Lake Hamilton lights up with fireworks three times during summer — Memorial Day weekend, Independence Day, and Labor Day — each time illuminating the lake after dark with displays that are visible from most shoreline positions.

Water skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, and open-water swimming are the summer staples in the deep main channel sections. The multiple public beaches — Hill Wheatley Park's sandy swim beach on the northern end, and smaller park access points around the lake — provide designated swimming areas with vehicle access for non-boat visitors. National Park Duck Tours and amphibious boat operations serve visitors exploring the lake from the hotel side of Hot Springs.

The trade-off of summer on the main channel is boat traffic intensity and the associated noise and wake that come with it. Residents in cove areas describe a noticeably quieter summer experience than those on the primary channel. Early morning before 9 AM provides the most peaceful on-water conditions even on the busiest summer days, before the rental boats and recreational traffic builds to its midday peak.

Fishing shifts to dawn-and-dusk patterns during summer as bass and other species move deep or into shade during the heat of the day. The Hot Springs Fishing Challenge runs through July, and the World Bass Fishing Championships was hosted on Lake Hamilton in 2026, bringing the lake significant regional fishing attention.

Fall: October and November

October on Lake Hamilton is when many full-time residents say they love the lake most. The summer crowds thin dramatically after Labor Day. Water temperatures remain comfortable for comfortable boating through most of October. The Ouachita Mountains surrounding the lake produce genuine autumn color, particularly on the western and southern shoreline sections where hardwood stands transition through yellows, reds, and oranges. The lake's character shifts from resort to residential — the people on the water in October are mostly people who live here, not visitors.

November brings the Entergy drawdown, typically in early November, beginning the transition to winter pool. The month also brings duck hunting season in Arkansas, which draws waterfowl hunters to the cove areas and protected sections of the lake. The Garvan Woodland Gardens Holiday Lights display begins in November — the Gardens lights up thousands of fixtures across the 210-acre property, and the lakeshore section of the display can be seen from the water, making a November or December boat tour to the Gardens a specifically Lake Hamilton experience.
