Things to Do Near Pomme de Terre Lake Missouri
The lake is the centerpiece, but Pomme de Terre buyers also have access to one of Missouri's best state parks, excellent deer and turkey hunting, regional trail systems, and day-trip access to Bennett Spring and the Ozarks recreation corridor to the south.
Pomme de Terre State Park
Pomme de Terre State Park on the Pittsburg (western) side of the lake is one of Missouri's most popular lake-based state parks. The park provides developed camping facilities (both electric and basic sites), a marina store, boat ramp access, swimming beaches, picnic areas, and hiking trails. Pomme de Terre State Park draws significant visitation from Kansas City and Springfield through the summer season. The Nemo Vista area of the park offers a more secluded camping and access experience than the main Pittsburg marina area.
For lake residents, the state park provides a recreational infrastructure that complements private lake ownership. The park's hiking trails traverse the lakeside terrain above the water — good for morning walks and wildlife observation. The swimming beach in the state park is a family amenity that private dock properties don't always provide on their own.
Hunting: Deer, Turkey, and Waterfowl
West-central Missouri is prime hunting territory, and Hickory County specifically has significant deer and turkey populations in its timber and agricultural land mosaic. Missouri's white-tailed deer season (archery opens in September, firearms in November) is one of the state's most popular hunting events. Hickory County and adjacent Polk and Dallas counties produce consistently good deer hunting. Turkey spring season in April and May draws hunters from across the region to the area's ridge and valley terrain.
The USACE-managed land around Pomme de Terre Lake allows hunting under cooperative agreements with Missouri Department of Conservation. Many Pomme de Terre residents combine lake fishing with fall deer hunting as the primary outdoor lifestyle at the lake — a combination that produces some of the most diverse outdoor recreational options of any lake community in Missouri.
Bennett Spring State Park
Bennett Spring State Park, approximately 45 minutes to an hour southwest of Pomme de Terre near Lebanon, is one of Missouri's four primary trout parks and a major destination in its own right. Bennett Spring is fed by one of Missouri's largest springs — the spring branch produces cold, clear water ideal for rainbow trout throughout the year. Daily trout fishing at Bennett Spring requires a separate trout fishing permit and operates under catch-and-return rules during specific hours with designated daily stocking schedules.
For Pomme de Terre residents, Bennett Spring is a half-day outing that provides a completely different fishing experience — fly fishing and light tackle for trout in a spring branch rather than reservoir fishing for warmwater species. The contrast makes for an appealing variety in the outdoor routine.
Kayaking and Paddle Sports
Pomme de Terre's upper coves and narrow tributary arms are exceptional paddling territory. On weekday mornings, the upper lake is nearly powerboat-free, and kayak exploration of the coves provides access to wildlife viewing — herons, eagles, deer, and river otters have all been documented along the lake's quieter tributary arms. The winding character of the coves means paddlers can spend hours exploring without retracing routes.
Swimming and Beaches
The Pomme de Terre State Park swimming beach provides a designated swimming area with basic facilities during the summer season. Private lake residents with lakefront properties and safe swimming depth at their dock may swim from their own dock; verify depth and water clarity conditions locally. Missouri does not restrict swimming from private docks on USACE reservoirs, but the USACE does prohibit swimming in areas near structures, ramps, and spillway zones. Personal watercraft (jet skis) and inflatable water toys at private docks are common among families with lakefront properties on Pomme de Terre.
